Well to say that i was slightly excited would be an understatement!!!  The Appa’s were held yesterday at Darling Harbour, photographers from all around Australia entered into these awards and for the first time i was there to watch them being Judged.   I have been awarded a state award earlier in the year but i wasn’t there to see it being judged.. This time i was determined to  make it in to watch the judging even if the thought of it made me feel ill with nerves.  It was even better than i imagined, i was nervous, excited, dizzy, scatty all rolled into one..  It was so amazing though to watch the awards with about 15 of my photography mates so it was such a thrill when i received my first silver…  I have always loved this image, the interaction with this loving family, their session was like this from beginning to the end .. and it was awarded a silver for state and also won 3rd prize in the group section in the Wppi at the beginning of this year so i did have high hopes for it at the Appa’s..  This was scored at an 84 !!!

After about an hours wait my 2nd silver came up, it was also another fav of mine, this family again were so much fun with each other and so natural with playing with one another..  I loved the colours of the location and the time of the day was just perfect as the sun was

hitting the tree above them..  I  really wanted this image to do well, to me it fitted the Family Category ‘s brief and i was so proud that it received a silver award…I think the judges also loved the interaction with the family as it scored a solid 82 !!!!

The 3rd image received lots of great feedback but sat on the fence at 79.. Just one more point and it would have made it to silver…  One Judge loved how you could see every little hair on this little girl and how well exposed her dress was ( ie that all the details

were still in dress which is very hard to do on a white beach in full sunlight and being a white dress) and she understood how hard

it was to take a photo in direct sunlight..  It was great to sit and hear your image being talked about, i think i had a few less nails after this debate as it did go on for quite a while…  I still love this image and it really was just a fraction

of a second as this little girl is one highly energetic and she just paused for the briefest of moments before running off down the beach again…

The 4th image was a risk, i adored the image, i loved the lighting of the sky, their choice of clothes on the day suited the setting perfectly but the risk was that they were not facing the camera , that the judges wouldn’t have a connection with them as you

couldn’t see their faces..  It was a risk that i was willing to take but after watching all of the judging there were no other images of just a families back view.. It scored a 74..  Still a good score , and was worth it just to

get an idea of what the judges are looking for in an image……I still adore this shot….

This has been such a rewarding experience and i’m now all set to enter some more competitions during the year as well as being super excited for next year’s Appa’s…….Thanks to all my lovely clients allowing me to show off your images, not a session

goes by without there being some personal fav’s amongst your sessions..  What a great 6 months it has been with an even bigger rest of the year planned.  Along with my first destination wedding in Fiji to look forward to…
