Well i’m spent, what a fantastic day…….. This has been the 2nd year in a row where our street have held the Australia Day billy Cart race and the street has been in an absolute frenzy for a few weeks now.. Families busy building their carts and having time trials down the street.. Dad’s getting help from each other to help build the carts.. Flags to be hung, signs to be made, sweep stakes to be drawn…..i’m telling you it is getting bigger each year and i seriously am totally in love with our street… Such a community spirit and something that really will be a childhood memory for many of these kids…….
The race started at 8.30, at 8.15 the teams started to arrive and park themselves in pit lane.. yes there were even lanes marked out for each team…… Then it was time for the National Anthem , yes my husband is crazy and suggested we play that.. Then time for the races…… Two hours of races, heats, semi’s and then the grand final, plenty of thrills and a few spills as well…….
One of the neighbours even had trophies made up for 1st , 2nd and 3rd place, and all the entrants received a certificate .. I’m telling you next year is going to be even bigger, with over 60 friends and neighbours coming to watch it really was a huge event… We’ve even appeared in the local paper, i raced home after the final race and downloaded the photos, edited them and then burnt all the neighbours a copy plus sent in a few to the local paper.. you can see it here: then back up to our neighbours house where a huge bbq was being held and then the annual street cricket match…….
We are all very weary but in a good way, so my challenge to you is what childhood memories can you make for your family next year.. it doesn’t need to be as grand as this billy cart race but something that can bring your family together, and maybe even a few neighbours.. I’m so proud of my husband for dreaming up this idea with two of the other neighbours, such a simple idea but it really has developed into such an incredible event with the most amazing community spirit..
So stay tuned for next years race, there’s already an a special guest coming to officially open the race for next year plus a stack of other great things being planned over a few beers with the dads……….Happy australia day everyone, Oi Oi Oi..
